Single O is an Australian based coffee company that also operates three cafes in Japan.[1][2]The business was established in 2003 in Surry Hills and was one of the pioneers of the third wave coffee in Australia.[3][4] The company has a strong focus on sustainability including achieving a carbon neutral status in 2023.[5][6][7]

History

Single O was founded by Emma and Dion Cohen in 2003, the pair quit their corporate jobs to open the first cafe in Surry Hills.[8][9]

In 2014, Single O expanded to Japan as a coffee roaster and distributor.[10] A cafe was launched in 2021 in Hamacho, Tokyo.[11][12]

In 2019, Single O launched the Sydney’s first self-serve batch brew bar.[13][14]

In 2023, Single expanded in Queensland with a cafe in Newstead, which features their iconic self serve batch brew bar.[15][16]

A coffee bar was opened in Shibuya in August 2024. the bar focuses on coffee but does have takeaway food options including a Tokyo bacon and egg roll and banana bread with espresso butter.[17][18]

Reception

The Single O cafe in Surry Hills has been listed on numerous Australian food publication as one of the best cafes in Sydney.[19][20][21][22]

In 2020, Single O sold a $20 Ethiopian brew in celebration of International Coffee Day.[23][24]

Single O won the Top Roaster Champions CafeSmart award in 2023 and 2024.[25][26]
