Simon Pettet is an English-born poet and long-time resident of New York's Lower East Side.[1] Born on November 6, 1953, in Wrotham, England, he studied at the University of Essex (with Ted Berrigan) from 1972-1975, and at Kings College, University of London (with Eric Mottram) from 1976-1977. In 1977, he relocated to the United States of America where he went on to publish a variety of his poetry with Talisman House Publishers, most notably his collected poems, Hearth, and an addenda to his collected poems, As A Bee.[2] Pettet also compiled and edited the Selected Art Writings of the "New York School" poet James Schuyler,[3] as well as co-editing (with James Meetze) Other Flowers, Schuyler's posthumous poems.[4] He has made two collaborations with photographer-filmmaker Rudy Burckhardt: Conversations about Everything and Talking Pictures.[5] He also published a fine-arts limited edition, Abundant Treasures with painter Duncan Hannah.[6] Pettet's poetry has been critically acclaimed, including by Poet John Ashbery who called him a "pillar of the St.Mark's Poetry Project, the core of all that is New York about the New York School,"[7] and Joanne Kyger who praised his poetry as "always insightful, ardent, playful, right on the spot, and ahead of the current."[8]
