Shruti is a revolutionary ear care initiative taken by Medtronic, a leading award-winning multinational healthcare device company. Shruti was launched in 2013 as a sustainable program offering low-cost otology care to underserved people by providing awareness, screening, diagnosis, and treatment.[1]

Shruti, since its inception, has created one of the largest networks of hearing loss clinics in India,[2] gaining recognition for its ENTraview[3] and Hearwithshruti - an online platform to help patients get solutions for ear care.[4] This program operates on a community health worker (CHW)-based service paradigm to address ear disorders and hearing loss in underprivileged groups by leveraging vigilant diagnostics, hearing implants, and digital technologies.[5]

Medtronic received the best Business Action on Health for Shruti, and later the program also won the CII Design Excellence Award for ENTraview. Shruti has also been featured in several media outlets including The Hindu, Indian Express,[6] Hindustan Times,[7] Financial Express,[8] India Times, The Hindu Business Line, and others.[9][10]

History

In July 2013, Shruti, a low-cost otology initiative by Medtronic was launched with the aim to offer awareness, screening, diagnosis, and treatment to the underserved communities in densely populated areas and low-income urban settlements, and rural areas.[11] The company is headquartered in Gurgaon, Haryana, India, and has expanded its operation by serving patients of over 200 cities covering 25000+ villages since its inception.[12]

Shruti leverages cutting-edge medical technology, telecommunication, and frugal innovation to offer its services and is regarded for its unique health system that serves dual objectives - social impact and business viability.

Shruti's online hearing care portal, known as 'hearwithshruti,' was created in November 2021. It is an online awareness and care portal that is available both on the website and social media. In light of the worldwide pandemic, this portal was designed to help Patients seeking medical assistance through a virtual platform.

The program had screened over 9,70,000 people as of March 2021 through community health workers. And as of 2022, the program is operational across seven self-funded cities in Delhi, Hyderabad, Aurangabad, Jaipur, Gurgaon, Amritsar, Chennai, Faridabad, Raipur, and Dhaka (Bangladesh).[13]

Model

The programs by Shruti are implemented by trained community health workers (CHWs) who are provided with an "Ear Screening Kit."[14] An ENT surgeon serves as the core point of care to whom Patients who received a positive preliminary diagnosis are referred where they can receive low-cost treatment such as advanced diagnosis, medications, audiometric tests, and surgical treatments.[15]
