Shopify Inc. is an international e-commerce corporation that was founded in Canada and has its headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario. Shopify is the name of the company's in-house e-commerce platform, which may be used for both online storefronts and retail point-of-sale systems. The Shopify platform provides online businesses with a package of services that includes tools for consumer involvement as well as marketing, shipping, and payment processing.

As of December 2021, the firm said that more than 2,000,000 enterprises in around 175 countries were using its platform. As of the year 2021, BuiltWith estimates that there are 1.58 million websites operating on the Shopify platform. W3Techs found that 4.4% of the top 10 million websites utilise Shopify as their eCommerce platform. During the calendar year 2022, the overall gross merchandise volume was more than 197 billion dollars US. Shopify is now ranked among the top 20 biggest publicly listed businesses in Canada based on market capitalization as of the month of July 2022.

Tobias Lütke and Scott Lake established Shopify in 2006, shortly after the pair failed in their first effort to launch Snowdevil, an online retailer of snowboarding gear. Lütke, a computer programmer by profession, decided to build his own e-commerce platform because he was unsatisfied with the options already available on the market. After spending two months developing Snowdevil's online shop, Lütke finally released it after having constructed it with the help of the open-source web application framework Ruby on Rails. In June of 2006, the creators of Snowdevil debuted the platform under the name Shopify. Liquid is an open-source template language that was developed by Shopify in 2006. It is built in Ruby and has been in use since that year.

The application programming interface (API) platform and App Store were both introduced by Shopify in June of 2009. The application programming interface (API) enables developers to construct apps for use with Shopify online shops, which can subsequently be distributed via the Shopify App Store.
