Rabbi Shmuel Hurwitz (born November 21, 1946) is a Chabad-Lubavitch rabbi, scholar, and author of halachic works widely used in Chabad educational institutions worldwide. His writings, including Shevach HaMoadim and Shevach Yakar, are studied in yeshivas and schools across the globe and serve as foundational texts for the study of Chabad halacha and custom. The title of his series, Shevach, is an acronym for his name, Shmuel Ben Chaim.

Early life and education

Hurwitz was born in the post-war Displaced Persons camp of Pocking, Germany, to the Hasidic Judaism Rabbi Chaim Hurwitz, also known as Chaim Tashkenter, for rescuing large numbers of Jews during World War II in the city of Tashkent. His parents had escaped the Soviet Union using false Polish passports.[1]. His family traces its lineage to several prominent rabbinic figures, including Aaron HaLevi ben Moses of Staroselye, the Isaiah Horowitz, Rabbi Zerachiah HaLevi (the Baal HaMaor)[2].

At the age of seven, Hurwitz enrolled in Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim in Brunoy, France.

Family

Hurwitz married Miriam Silver in Detroit, Michigan, whose family descends from several notable rabbinic lines, including the Slonim (Hasidic dynasty), the Maharsha, the Rema, the Megaleh Amukos, and the Margolies family (Which includes Ephraim Zalman Margolioth).[3]

Career

Hurwitz began his career as an educator in Oholei Torah in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. With the approval of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, he authored his first work, Mai Chanukah, a study of the halachot and minhagim of Hanukkah. He later produced similar volumes on other holidays, which he later combined into Shevach HaMoadim (1990). Following its publication, Hurwitz authored Shevach Yakar (1998), Shevach HaBris (2008), and Shevach HaNisuin (2011).[4]

Throughout his career, Hurwitz received approbations from prominent rabbis including Moshe Feinstein, Pinchas Hirschprung, Yitzchok Hendel, Yehuda Kalman Marlow, and Yisroel Yitzchok Piekarski (listed alphabetically).[5]

His works are used in Chabad institutions worldwide.[6] In Crown Heights, the Shoineh Halachot program incorporates competitive study of his texts, and Hurwitz remains the main judge of the competition.[7] In Israel, some schools have students memorize sections of his books verbatim.[8] He has lectured internationally, including in Australia, Mexico, Panama, Brazil, France, South Africa, Argentina, and all over the US.

Influence and citations

Hurwitz’s works are frequently cited in rabbinic literature. For example, the journal Kovetz Haoros UBiurim discusses the nuances of Shevach Yakar in detail.[9] Additionally, the Siddur Admur HaZaken references numerous passages from his books.[10] Other rabbinic texts, such as Dinei Iter, cite his writings for guidance and clarification on Chabad halachic practice.[11]

Later life

Hurwitz resides in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where he continues to write and review halachic material. Though he is no longer active as a classroom educator, his published works continue to serve as key halachic references within the Chabad community.[12]

Legacy

His structured approach, clarity, and reliance on the sources of the Chabad Rebbeim have made his sefarim central to Halakha study in Chabad yeshivas worldwide.[13]
