Shiral Virantha Lakthilaka (Born 17 September 1963) is a Sri Lankan Politician and an Practicing Attorney in the fields of Civil law, Public law and Human Rights in Sri Lanka. He was the adviser to Maithripala Sirisena, the former President of the republic of Sri Lanka.[1] He has appeared in more than 750 legal aid cases filed under "Prevention of Terrorism Act" and Fundamental Rights violations.

Education

Shiral Lakthilaka completed his Primary and Secondary Education at Rahula College - Matara,[2] Sri Lanka and in 1991 went on to completing the Bachelor of Law, General Degree conferred by the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He holds a Masters Degree in Conflict Studies at the Arcadia University and Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Career

Shiral Lakthilaka started his career in 1993 as a project coordinator for the Legal Assistance and Education Program of the Movement for Inter-Radical Justice and Equality (MIRJE) Colombo, Sri Lanka.[3] In 1996 He joined the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of Sri Lanka as a Member of the Strategy and Research Committee.[4] He was appointed as a Consultant to the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs in 2000 and was in 2001 was promoted to the position of Advisor to the Ministry and the chief negotiator of the Sri Lankan negotiating team Prof. G. L. Pieris.[5]

As the advisor to the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs, he was responsible for the coordination of the peace process, representing the ministry at the Sri Lankan Peace Secretariat, Coordinating and providing necessary guidance to the Triple R (Reconciliation, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction) and Coordinating Chief Negotiator's work with regards to the Peace Process.
