Controversies

Shehzad Poonawalla has been involved in several political controversies, primarily related to his outspoken views and public disagreements with opposition parties and members of his own family.

In 2017, Poonawalla made national headlines after publicly questioning the Congress party's internal election process, calling it "rigged" and suggesting that Rahul Gandhi's elevation to party president was pre-decided. He labeled the party’s internal democracy a "sham," which drew criticism from senior Congress leaders and his own brother, Tehseen Poonawalla, who distanced himself from the remarks and called it a betrayal of the family and party loyalty.

Following his criticism of the Congress party, Shehzad was increasingly seen as aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), though he maintained he was acting independently at the time. He officially joined the BJP in later years and became one of the party’s prominent media panelists, often engaging in aggressive debates on national television.
