Early Life in South Africa

She was born to second generation immigrants during the apartheid era. Her great grandparents were indentured labourers (Girimitiyas) from British India transported to work on plantations and factories in South Africa from 1860s to early 1900s.[5] Her first public performance was at age eight at the Shri Luxmi Narayan Temple in Mobeni Heights on Krishna Janmasthami.[6] In 1976 she performed in Kishore Kumar Nite at the Durban City Hall.[7][8] Kishore Kumar was very impressed with her talent and encouraged her parents to send her to India. [9]In 1977 she performed a duet with Mahendra Kapoor in his concert at Shah Jehan Cinema.[10]

Later Years in India

In 1986 she recorded her first album Sneha with music by Sayed Ali and lyrics by Zaheer Anwar at Ferrographer's Studio, Colaba, Bombay.[11][12] In 1987, she enrolled at Bhartiya Sangeet and Nartan Shikshapeeth in Bombay for sitar and vocal studies. She also performed in live concerts in and around Bombay with the famous duo Mahesh Kanodia and Naresh Kanodia known as Mahesh Kumar and Party. She was signed by Venus Records & Tapes as a recording artiste for three years from 1988 to 1991.[13] In 2002 she was initiated into the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition by Sacinandana Swami who is a disciple of ISKCON founder A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and received the diksha name Sacidevi dasi. In 2003 she launched her independent music label Urja Music as a singer, composer and producer. Nhlanhla Sibisi, (Recording Industry of South Africa) RiSA CEO praised her international achievements in Indian music and commented that South Africa is in good stead with talents of her magnitude.[14] Through her recordings and live performances, she influences many on the spiritual path.[15][16] She has worked with Sonu Nigam,[17][18] Anup Jalota[19], Adnan Sami,[20] Udit Narayan,[21] Vinod Rathod,[22] Mohamed Aziz,[23] Sudesh Bhosale, Rattan Mohan Sharma.[24]
