Shapr3D is a solid modeling computer-aided design (CAD) app that provides a complete direct modeling feature set on Apple Pencil compatible iPads.[1] The manufacture-grade 3D modeling tool uses a Siemens™ Parasolid™ geometric modeling kernel and D-Cubed™ sketch engine.[2] It is compatible with all major desktop CAD software, and lets users directly import X_T, STEP, IGES, STL, DXF, DWG, JPG, PNG files and export X_T, STEP, DWG, DXF, STL, OBJ files.[3]
The app was originally developed using the OpenCASCADE kernel.[4] In 2017, the team partnered with Siemens PLM to integrate the Siemens™ Parasolid™ geometric modeling kernel. Shapr3D is the first CAD system to run Parasolid™ software natively on iPad.[5]
Shapr3D has both commercial and academic users. Educational institutes who use the software include MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Cambridge, University of Tokyo, and Singapore Polytechnic, while professionals include product designers, engineers, architects, and jewelry designers.[6]
Overview
The app operates using a freemium business model. Users can model with the entire toolset and export models in low-resolution for free. It includes a series of in-app tooltips and free video tutorials that guide users through all of the app’s features and tools within a few hours.[7]
It’s delivered via app download in a Software as a Service (SaaS) model. Updates are released directly to the app and with auto-update settings turned on, users don’t need to manually update it.
Modeling technology
Direct modeling with apple pencil
Shapr3D's direct-modeling user experience leverages the underlying Parasolid technology using Apple Pencil and the iPad’s touch-screen interface.[8]
80-90% of all modeling is done with the Apple Pencil, with the exception of basic gestures like zoom and pan, which use finger-touch navigation.[9] The Apple Pencil enables all other CAD controls. For example, users create a 2D sketch by drawing it in a workspace, extrude a body’s volume by tapping on a face and dragging it, or create a fillet by tapping on an edge and dragging it.[10]
Mobile first CAD tool
Shapr3D uses the local power of iPads to support the Siemens Parasolid kernel and D-Cubed sketch engine. Parasolid and D-Cubed are the same technologies used in SOLIDWORKS, Inventor, Solid Edge, NX, Onshape and other CAD software.[11]
Tech Soft 3D’s HOOPS Exchange technology is also integrated with Shapr3D which provide data compatibility with standard industry CAD formats.[12]
The app works without an internet connection, MCAD models can be created, edited, save and exported without a server backend.
History
Company history
Founded in 2014, the first two versions were built before Apple Pencils were available and used finger-touch navigation.
The first public version released on the App Store in March 2016 included the stylus-driven UX for enhanced precision. The app’s third major release in 2017 introduced the Siemens Parasolid™ integration.[13]
In March 2020, Shapr3D was designated as an Editors' Choice app in the Apple App Store. [14]
Funding
A $1.3M seed round by Lifeline Ventures and InReach Ventures in 2017 was followed by a $6M Series A funding round in September 2019 led by Point9 Capital and Creandum.[15]
Major releases
Incremental updates to Shapr3D are released every two weeks.[16]
