Shanmuganathan Vasanthapriyan is a Sri Lankan computer scientist and academic who serves as a senior professor of computing at the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. He has previously held administrative roles there, including faculty dean. His research focuses on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data mining, with applications in legal workflow management, augmented reality, and healthcare systems. He has contributed to the development of national guidelines in hypertension and digital technologies for education and industry. Beyond his university activities, Vasanthapriyan has taken on leadership positions in professional bodies, including the IEEE Sri Lanka Section.

Early life and education

Vasanthapriyan was born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. He completed a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Computer Science at the University of Peradeniya in 2004 and was awarded the Ashoka Amunugama Memorial Prize for his academic performance. He later pursued postgraduate studies abroad, earning a Master of Science in Computer Science and Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology in 2010, supported by a Nuffic Fellowship in 2007. He completed his doctoral training in 2017, receiving a Doctor of Engineering in Computer Science from Wuhan University of Technology under a Chinese Government Scholarship awarded in 2014.

Career

Vasanthapriyan joined the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka in 2005 as a lecturer. He later became the founder of the Department of Computing and Information Systems, working there between 2011 and 2014, where he helped design degree programmes that were consistent with ACM and IEEE curriculum guidelines. In 2021, he guided the launch of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Software Engineering, expanding the university's computing-related degree options.

He was promoted to Professor of Computer Science in 2019 and headed the Department of Computing and Information Systems from 2020 to 2022. In 2022, he was appointed coordinator for the Faculty of Computing, and in 2023 he also served as head of the Department of Data Science while acting as Dean. Later in 2023, he became the inaugural Dean of the newly established Faculty of Computing, the university's ninth faculty.

Awards and honours

In 2023, he received the ICT Educator of the Year 2022 award from the Computer Society of Sri Lanka, presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in recognition of his contributions to ICT education.

In 2024, Vasanthapriyan was recognized as the ICT Leader of the Year 2023 by the Computer Society of Sri Lanka for his work in the ICT sector and efforts toward digital transformation in the country. The award was presented by the Deputy Minister of Digital Economy.

Leadership and professional service

Vasanthapriyan has held positions in several national and international professional bodies. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and has also been involved with the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS)

In 2025, he became Chair (President) of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section, after having served as Vice Chair (Vice President) in 2024. That same year, he began a two-year appointment to the IEEE Conferences Committee's Technical Program Integrity Committee (TPIC), which is responsible for standards and oversight within IEEE conference activities. He was also named a member of the IEEE Region 10 Conference Committee in 2025, a group involved in coordinating and assuring the quality of conferences across the region.

In July 2024, Vasanthapriyan served as the moderator of a panel discussion on "Shaping the Future: Policies for Generative AI in Sri Lankan Higher Education," a webinar reported by the national newspaper Ceylon Today that examined the role of generative AI in universities.

He has been a member of the University Grants Commission's Standing Committee on Computing, a national body that reviews and guides university level ICT and computing education. Its work includes assessing new degree proposals, recommending academic standards, and advising on quality assurance to support national policy goals and alignment with international expectations. The committee is made up of representatives from leading universities and other subject experts.
