OccupationChinese American Designer

Sha Yao is a Chinese American designer who developed a line of tableware called Eatwell that is specifically designed for people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The innovation addresses the pain point of people with cognitive impairment who struggle with traditional tableware, which can be confusing and frustrating to use[1].

Life

Sha Yao obtained her undergraduate degree from Soochow University in Taiwan and went on to pursue a master's degree at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Currently, she runs a design studio called SHA DESIGN in San Francisco. Eatwell was originally her idea for her master's thesis but has since undergone many revisions.[2].

Contributions

The impact of Sha Yao's innovation has been significant, as it has improved the quality of life for people with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers. Those who have physical, motor, and cognitive limitations are the target audiences. They may be men or women from varied racial and professional backgrounds, but most of them will be elderly[3]. The innovation is still in use today and has even expanded beyond tableware to include other products for people with dementia, such as clothing and accessories. Sha Yao's company, 4th-Place, continues to innovate in the field of dementia care, and her work has inspired others to develop new products and services to address the needs of this population[4].
