South Orange, New Jersey is home to Seton Hall University (SHU), a Catholic-affiliated research institution that is privately owned. Seton Hall Institution is the oldest diocesan university in the United States. It was established in 1856 by then-Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley and named after his aunt, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton.

Seton Hall is an educational institution that is comprised of 11 schools and colleges and has around 5,800 undergraduate students and approximately 4,400 graduate students enrolled. It is a member of the category known as "R2: Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity."

The university is especially well-known across the country for the accomplishments of its men's basketball team. The team has competed in 13 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournaments and gained widespread recognition after reaching the championship game of the 1989 tournament, where it was defeated by the Michigan Wolverines by a score of 80–79 in overtime. A significant rise in the number of applications from prospective students as well as attendance at games has been brought about as a direct result of the success of the basketball team on national television.
