Sergiusz Jóźwiak (October 25, 1958, in Odesa) is a Polish physician, pediatrician, pediatric neurologist, and professor of medical sciences. He works in the Science Department at the Children's Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw. He is also Chairman of the Human Development Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Life

In 1983, he graduated from the Medical Faculty of the Medical Academy of Warsaw (currently the Medical University of Warsaw). In 1990, he defended his doctoral dissertation, "The Diagnostic Value of Clinical Symptoms and Auxiliary Tests in the Diagnosis of Tuberous Sclerosis in Children." He obtained his postdoctoral degree in 1995 at the Children's Memorial Health Institute based on his dissertation, "Tuberous Sclerosis in Children – Clinical Analysis.".[1] He was conferred the title of professor in medical and health sciences by the President of the Republic of Poland in 2003. He is the author of over 500 publications, several textbooks, and monographs. Hirsch index 56 [2](2025). Editorial board member: Pediatric Neurology, Journal of Child Neurolology[3], Annals of Child Neurolology[4], European Journal of Paediatric Neurology[5], Polish Journal of Neurology and Neurosurgery[6], Child Neurology[7].

Most significant scientific achievements:

  • Discovery of the TSC1 gene, mutations of which are responsible for the development of tuberous sclerosis symptoms (Science, 1997)[8].
  • Discovery that in genetically determined epilepsies, early treatment of EEG changes prevents epilepsy and epileptic encephalopathy (Eur.JPed.Neurol, 2011[9], Ann Neurol, 2021[10], Coordination of the EPISTOP grant).
  • Discovery of biomarkers for drug-resistant epilepsy (co-author of two European patent applications)[11].
  • Development and implementation of a preventive antiepileptic treatment method for infants with tuberous sclerosis in many countries around the world[12].

Honors and Awards

  • 2007 – Individual Award from the Minister of Health for elucidating the molecular mechanisms of tuberous sclerosis development;
  • 2008 – Team Award from the Polish Academy of Sciences for research on molecular aspects of the pathogenesis of tumors in tuberous sclerosis;
  • 2009 – Manuel Gómez Award from the American Society of Sclerosis Patients;
  • In 2021, the Golden Scalpel in Medicine distinction.
