Serge Bouznah was born on May 16, 1955 in Tunis.
He is a French public health physician, author and educator specializing in transcultural mediation in clinical practice. He is the director of the Babel Center[1] at the Hôpital Cochin-Paris, where he develops cross-cultural clinical approaches to hospital medicine and child protection.
He is a member of the "Methods and cultures” research team at INSERM-CESP-Unité 1178- Paris
In 2021, he founded the first University diploma in transcultural health mediation[2] at Paris City University.
PUBLICATIONS
In 2022, Bouznah and his co-author Catherine Lewertowski, are publishing Spirits in the Consulting Room - Eight Tales of Healing[3] in the USA via Rutgers University Press
This is the first English language edition of the book, which has previously been published in French by In Press Editions reissued in 2021[4]), and in Italian under the title of “Quando gli spiriti incontrano i medici. Sette storie per guarireʺ (Edizione italiana a cura di Lelia Pisani, 2017. Collana: Sagara, I quaderni della scuola. Edizioni Colibri, Milan).
Abstract Drawn from two decades of the author's experience in transcultural mediation, Spirits in the Consulting Room tells the stories of eight patients—most of them migrants—and their families. The book shows how trained transcultural mediators can help to redress the power imbalance between doctors and the migrants they treat, providing patients with advocates who respect the authority of their background and experiences and don’t just take the side of the medical professionals. The insights modeled in this book can be applied to any medical situation where doctors and patients find themselves speaking different languages.
AWARDS
In 2008, Bouznah and his team were awarded the national “Fight Against Pain” prize[5] by the APICIL foundation in Lyon, France.
