Seok Uro(Korean: 석우로, Hanja: 昔于老) was a military general and crown prince of Silla during the early-3th century. According to Samguk Sagi, he is son of Naehae of Silla and son-in-law of Jobun of Silla. [1] [2] [3]

History

According to the Samguk Sagi, in 209, the Eight Port Kingdoms War(浦上八國 亂)[4] broke out to determine hegemony in the southern part of the peninsula. eight small nations(浦上八國) in the Nakdong River basin attacked the Silla-friendly Ara Gaya|Anra-guk, the prince of Anra-guk asked Silla for a rescue army, and the king ordered Crown Prince Seok Uro to gather his troops and attack the eight kingdoms. Seok uro saved Anra-guk and rescued 6,000 of the pro-Silla Gaya people who had been captured and returned to their homeland. Three years later, three countries among Eight Kingdoms(浦上八國), Golpo-Guk, Chilpo-Guk, and Gosapo-guk, will launch counterattacks against Silla. A battle took place in Ulsan|Yeomhae, the southeastern part of the capital, and the war ended when the Silla king came out to fight against it, and the soldiers of the three kingdoms were defeated.

In 231, small country of Gammun-guk(present-day Gimcheon) was conquered by general Seok Uro. In 233, the Japanese invasion across the Korea Strait was defeated by attack with fire in Sado(沙道)(present-day Yeongdeok County|Yeongdeok).

In 243, Seok uro tried to defend Goguryeo's invasion of the northern frontier, but failed to win and retreated. In 244, Ichan(2nd in official rank 17) Seok Uro was appointed to Ibeolchan(1st in official rank 17) to take charge of military affairs. In 245, when Goguryeo invaded the northern frontier of Silla again, Silla troops struggled and stepped down to a place called Maduchek(馬頭柵). As the soldiers suffered from the cold at night, Seok Uro comforted them and made a fire himself to warm them up, and all the soldiers were thrilled. However, Goguryeo–Wei War|Goguryeo at this time was at war with the Wei. So it is likely that the invasion of Silla's northern frontier was not Goguryeo's army, but displaced people, who has avoided war.

In 247, Saryangbeol(沙梁伐國) or called Sabeol(沙伐國)(present-day Sangju) belonged to Silla before, but suddenly betrayed and returned to Baekje. Uro beat them to destruction.

In 253, a Japanese envoy visited and Uro treated him. but, Uro insulted the envoy, saying "I will soon make your king a slave of salt and the queen a woman of rice." When the Japanese emperor heard this, invaded Silla in retaliation, and the Cheomhae of Silla fled to the Ulyu village(present-day Uljin County|Uljin). Then Seok Uro said "I'll take responsibility for this confusion that I've caused". Uro went to the Japanese army and said "It was just a joke, why did you use the army?" none answer from Japanese army then burned him and went away. But this is not the end of the case. Later, when the envoy came, a revenge case occurred in which Seok Uro's wife, who held a grudge, burned and killed the envoy to avenge her husband, and the Japanese attacked again to avenge the murder.[5] After this war, basically Japan and Silla continued to be enemies. Until the fall of Silla.[6]
