Sel Buyuksarac is a business professional and community leader in Jacksonville, Florida. He became well-known in the community as the founder of River City Science Academy, a local charter school. Since founding the school in 2007, Mr. Buyuksarac has gone on to become involved in a wide variety of community organizations.

Background

Sel grew up in Turkey. After finishing school and getting a civil engineering degree, he went to the Philippines. His plan was to spend two years there setting up a school. He stayed five years, getting his MBA and meeting his wife, Angie. In 2002, they moved to the United States and had a tough beginning. In 2007, he opened River City Science Academy with 160 students. It has grown to four campuses with about 3,000 students.[1] Sel now serves as the Chief of Public Affairs & Government Relations for the school. [2]

Community Involvement

Many in the community know Sel for his yearly Friendship & Gratitude Dinners. Every year, during the month of Ramadan, Sel and his wife welcome community members into their home to break the fast in the evening. In 2019, from May 5 to May 28, they hosted more than 300 people.[3]

Sel is currently Vice Chair for the Jacksonville Human Rights Commission, Vice President of GlobalJax [4], and serves on the board of Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Transparency Committee, Downtown Jacksonville Rotary Club, Jacksonville Public Education Fund Teacher of the Year Selection Committee and Advisory Board, Keiser University Advisory Board, Department of Defense's Starbase Advisory Board, and more. He graduated from Leadership Jacksonville in 2019.

Local Elections

In 2018, Sel ran for election to the Duval Soil and Water Conservation District to represent Group 3 in Florida. He lost in the general election on November 6, 2018.[5]
