Sekou Sylla (born March 31, 2000) is an American professional basketball player for the North-West Tasmania Thunder[1] of the NBL1, in his first professional season[2][3]. He played college basketball for the Nova Southeastern Sharks men's basketball where he led the team to a 31-1 season finishing in the Elite Eight in the NCAA Division II championships in the 2021-22 season. Sylla was named as the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year in 2022[4]. Sylla finished his collegiate career with Towson Tigers men's basketball.

Early life

Sylla was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn in the Tilden Houses to a Guinean mother and a French father. He attended South Shore High School where he played Junior varsity his sophomore year and varsity his final two seasons for the Vikings[5] and graduated in 2018. Sylla began his collegiate career for the Saint Rose Golden Knights in 2018 before transferring to Nova Southeastern in 2020 where his season was cancelled due to Covid-19. He graduated with his Bachelor's degree in Sports Management in 2022[6]. He then concluded his collegiate career with a graduate season at Towson University in 2023 where he obtained a Master's degree in Professional studies.

College career

Sylla played two years of college basketball for Saint Rose, as a freshman he was elected to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team averaging 12.1 points and 7.3 rebounds in just 24.8 minutes per game. He also earned four NE-10 Rookie of the Week awards. As a sophomore Sylla was named Northeast-10 Second Team while averaging 21.9 points (2nd in the NE-10) and 11.6 rebounds (1st in the NE-10) per game he racked up 20 double-doubles – tops in the nation during the regular season he was among NCAA.com's National Starting Five during the first half of the season, was recognized as the USBWA National Player of the Week[7]. Sylla then transferred to Nova Southeastern where he averaged 22.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game while shooting 57.8% from the field.In a lone season with the Sharks, Sylla broke the single season scoring record, field goals made record, and rebound record[8]. His final season was played with the Towson Tigers he was named to the Colonial Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll,recorded his season-high in points with 16 against University of Delaware in the CAA Quarterfinals.[9]

In 119 career games, Sylla made 93 starts and tallied 1,853 points, 1,001 rebounds, and 49 double-doubles while shooting a career 54% from the field. [10]
