Sean F. Brady is an American scientist and professor at The Rockefeller University. His research focuses on the discovery of bioactive small molecules from unculturable microorganisms. Since 2006, he is the Evnin and Tri-Institutional Professor and Head of the Laboratory of Genetically Encoded Small Molecules at The Rockefeller University.
Education
Sean F. Brady earned a Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology from Pomona College in 1993. He went on to receive a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Cornell University in 2001. The following year, he joined Harvard Medical School as a fellow at the Institute of Chemistry and Cell Biology, and in 2004 was appointed instructor in the Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology.[1] During his time at Cornell and Harvard, he worked with Jon Clardy to develop methods using environmental DNA (eDNA) to isolate novel natural products from sources such as soil.
Research
In 2006, Brady moved to Rockefeller as an Assistant Professor. Since then, he is the Head of the Laboratory of Genetically Encoded Small Molecules. Brady's research focuses on the discovery of natural products produced by microorganisms, particularly those that are not readily cultured in the laboratory. Brady's laboratory has developed approaches that involve analyzing and isolating large fragments of microbial eDNA from natural samples and cloning them into culturable bacterial hosts. These approaches have led to the discovery of multiple previously uncharacterized antibiotic compounds.[2] Brady's group also developed technique to address antibiotic resistance.[3]
Brady's research has been recognized with several scientific awards. In 2009, he was named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Early Career Scientist. He is also recognized as a Beckman Young Investigator, an Irma T. Hirschl Scholar, a Searle Scholar, and a recipient of the Kenneth Rainin Foundation's Innovator and Breakthrough Awards. Brady is a co-founder of Lodo Therapeutics.[4]
