Scott Martin (born 22 July 1989) is a Northern Irish influencer and former rugby player. He is currently a radio presenter on Lisburn's 98FM and head of media at Glentoran Women. He previously played rugby for Ulster Academy and Ireland U20s.[citation needed]
Rugby career
Early career
Martin represented Malone Rugby Club and Harding Memorial Primary School, captaining the Malone side to victory in the Pat Lawler Memorial Trophy in 2001. Upon entering secondary education, Martin represented Grosvenor Grammar School.
Senior career
Local press referred to Martin as a 'points machine'[1] in the buildup to third round of the 2008 Ulster Schools' Cup and his performances in the competition[2] earned the headline 'Great Scott' on a back page spread of the Belfast Newsletter newspaper. Despite Grosvenor being eliminated in the quarter-finals, Martin ended the tournament as the highest point scorer and signed a professional contract with Ballymena and the Ulster academy for the following year.
Martin was selected to represent Ireland U20s at the World Junior Championships, earning a debut cap in defeat to New Zealand. Ireland failed to make it out of the group stages at the tournament. Martin added a further U20s cap in a win over Tonga later that season.[3]
During the off-season Martin required surgery for a wrist injury picked up during the season. A poor start to the season led to a change of management at Ballymena and Martin was one of six players released from their contracts. [4]
Following rehabilitation of the wrist injury, Martin joined Grosvenor Rugby Club and played in a victorious Gordon West Cup final at the Kingspan Stadium against Letterkenny later that year, scoring twelve of the side's twenty seven points.[5]
An unbeaten season in 2010/11 season, saw Grosvenor retain the Gordon West Cup and gain promotion to division qualifying two. The side went on to finish third in the league in the 2011/12 season and reached the final of the McCrea Cup.[6]
Martin was substituted in the first half following an injury to his left knee and subsequently retired from rugby stating that he had 'fallen out of love' with the game in post match interview. [7]
Business career
Upon graduating, Martin worked for serveral multi-national retailers and was part of the COVID response team awarded the Best Business Award of 'Best COVID response by a retailer' in 2020.[8] In 2021 Martin joined accountancy firm Ernst & Young.
In 2015 Martin purchased the land and property assets of Bŭrz Pechat in Ruse, a northern region of Bulgaria. Bŭrz Pechat was a media printing company that entered administration in 2014 and was subsequently sold by the liquidator to settle outstanding debts. As a result of the acquisition Martin also become CEO of the registered company. In late 2015 he relaunched the business as a media agency. Bought as a collateral shell company, this transformed the business into a self-sustainable organization. As of 2017, Penka Petrova is listed as the firm's Managing Director and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the business. The company was made public on the NASDAQ stock exchange in the same year through Bancorp. Martin remains on the Board of Directors as Chief Executive Officer. The net worth of the company is currently believed to be around $31.18 million dollars.[9]
Media career
In 2016 Martin appeared on BBC's The One Show to talk about the Northern Ireland football team's participation in the 2016 European Football Championships in France. Martin joined Lisburn's 98FM in March 2020 initially for a one-hour slot on Friday nights, but took the host role on 'Sound Up Saturdays' soon after.[10] He joined the media team at Irish Premier League side Glentoran during the 2021/2022 season and continued in the role of team interviewer for the 2022/2023 season. In the summer of 2022 he joined ACA modelling agency and appeared in Series Four of BBC's Beauty Queen and Single TV show.[12] Martin joined the Glentoran Women support staff for the 2023 season and is responsible for the team's media. [13]
