OccupationCriminal defense lawyer

Scott Grubman is an American criminal defense lawyer, known for his work representing high-profile public figures, including Kenneth Chesebro, who had been widely described as the "architect" of the plan to overturn the 2020 election results. Based in Atlanta, he is a founding partner of the law firm Chilivis Grubman, which focuses on criminal defense, civil litigation, and government affairs.

Education and early career

Grubman graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law, and was admitted to the Georgia bar, in 2008.[1] He graduated law school Summa Cum Laude and was inducted into the Order of the Coif. After law school, he served as a judicial law clerk to Judge Lisa Godbey Wood, United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of Georgia, and then to Judge Joel Dubina, who was then the Chief Judge of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.[2]

After his clerkships, Grubman worked for the United States Department of Justice, serving first as a trial attorney in Washington, D.C., and then as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of Georgia.[2]

In 2015, after a short stint at a mid-sized Atlanta law firm, Grubman became a partner at the law firm of Chilivis, Cochran, Larkins & Bever, an Atlanta boutique litigation firm specializing in white collar criminal defense and healthcare law.[3] In December 2019, after two of the firm's senior attorneys departed, Grubman co-founded Chilivis Grubman.[4]

Notable cases

Grubman's most high-profile representation was that of Kenneth Chesebro, who was indicted along with Donald Trump and 17 others in 2023 in a state RICO prosecution brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fanni Willis.[5] Grubman and his team gained international attention after they became the first of the 19 defendants to demand a speedy trial.[6] Chesebro eventually plead guilty to one felony and was sentenced to 5 years of probation under Georgia's First Offender Statute.[7]

Grubman has represented a number of other high-profile public officials, including former City of Atlanta Chief Financial Officer Jim Beard, who was indicted for fraud and gun possession in 2020, as well as the former press secretary for then-Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, who was the first person criminally charged under Georgia's Open Records Act.[8] Grubman has also represented Jim Beck, the former Georgia Insurance Commissioner who was charged with fraud,[9] Christian Coomer, a former Georgia Court of Appeals judge who was removed from the bench for various ethical violations,[10] and Khalid Kamau, the Mayor of South Fulton, Georgia, in connection with an ethics trial.[11]

In addition to his representation of public officials, Grubman is also known for his representation of healthcare providers in connection with criminal fraud prosecutions and False Claims Act litigation, including a Georgia physician who was accused of performing unnecessary gynecological procedures on I.C.E. detainees in a South Georgia immigration detention facility.[12]

Other activities

In addition to his legal practice, Grubman serves as an Adjunct professor of law at both Emory University School of Law, where he teaches a class on white collar crime, as well as Georgia State University College of Law, where he teaches a class on healthcare fraud and abuse. Grubman also served as an Executive Producer for a 2020 podcast called Racket: Inside the Gold Club, which recounted Atlanta's infamous Gold Club trial.[13]
