Scandia Manufacturing, Inc. is an American manufacturer of commercial sauna heaters, steam rooms, salt rooms, and cold therapy rooms. Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, the company is one of the longest-operating sauna-equipment producers in the United States, with roots dating back to the early 1960s. Scandia designs and assembles its products domestically and supplies hotels, fitness centers, athletic facilities, and residential wellness spaces across North America.

History

Scandia Manufacturing originated in the early 1990s as a family-owned enterprise producing electric sauna heaters and prefabricated sauna rooms for the growing North American wellness market.

In 2003, Scandia Manufacturing acquired the sauna-heater manufacturing division of Vico Products Manufacturing Company, a California-based producer of sauna heaters formerly owned by Sta-Rite Industries, a division of WICOR Industries (Wisconsin Energy Corp.). Vico began producing sauna heaters in 1962. The acquisition expanded Scandia’s production capacity and positioned it as one of the only remaining U.S. manufacturers of sauna heaters.[1][2]

Following the acquisition, Scandia consolidated its manufacturing operations in Boise, Idaho, where it continues to produce sauna heaters, steam rooms, salt rooms, and cold rooms.

Products and innovations

Scandia Manufacturing produces a range of wellness and thermal-therapy equipment, including:

  • Electric and gas sauna heaters – stainless-steel, UL-listed systems for commercial and residential applications.
  • Steam rooms – modular units designed for tiled and acrylic enclosures.
  • Prefabricated sauna rooms – cedar or hemlock structures built for quick installation.
  • Control systems – digital and mechanical controllers with programmable safety features.

Advanced Hybrid Steam Room (AHSR)

In 2018, Scandia Manufacturing designed and introduced the Advanced Hybrid Steam Room (AHSR)—a free-standing, aluminum-framed steam environment that redefined sanitary and energy-efficient construction standards for commercial wellness spaces.

Scandia serves as the OEM manufacturer of the AHSR, marketed and distributed through its partner company, Am-Finn Sauna & Steam. The system requires no waterproofing, insulation, or finished walls and features non-porous acrylic panels that improve energy efficiency by up to 50 percent compared with traditional tile rooms.

Its PowerZone® Sanitation System uses ozone-based sterilization to eliminate 99.98 percent of bacteria and viruses, reducing mold and mildew without chemicals. The AHSR is fully customizable with printed graphics, LED lighting, and multi-tier benches, and can be installed in a single day.

In 2024, the AHSR received the Architecture MasterPrize in the Innovative Design category for its technological and hygienic advancements in wellness construction.[3][4]

FrostLocker Cold Therapy Room

In 2025, Scandia Manufacturing designed and introduced the FrostLocker, a dry cold-therapy room engineered as a cleaner, more energy-efficient alternative to cold plunges and cryotherapy chambers. The system delivers controlled cold exposure without standing water, plumbing, or chemical sanitation, offering a low-maintenance and hygienic solution for commercial facilities.

The FrostLocker integrates precision-controlled refrigeration, LED lighting, and ergonomic design to provide the physiological benefits of cold therapy within a comfortable, accessible enclosure.

In recognition of its innovation and design impact, the FrostLocker was awarded the SIBEX Innovation of the Year Award in 2025, highlighting Scandia’s leadership in wellness technology and environmental efficiency.[5][6]

Industry context

Scandia Manufacturing remains one of the only U.S.-based producers of sauna heaters, hybrid steam rooms, and cold rooms. The company’s emphasis on domestic manufacturing, safety certification, and hygienic innovation positions it as a key supplier to professional sports organizations, wellness chains, and hospitality projects.
