Saumya Sengupta (born 6 June 1987) is an Indian film director and screenwriter[1][2] who predominantly works in the field of Bengali cinema. Sengupta's first experimental feature film Mrityupathojatri (2022)[3] starring Rahul Arunoday Banerjee[4] in the lead, was critically acclaimed[5], and he first came to limelight after his documentary I Am Joyita[6] was aired by the National Geographic Channel India[7] (2022).

Early life

Saumya Sengupta was born in a Bengali middle class family, in a remote village named Udaynarayanpur, which falls under the Howrah district of West Bengal. Sengupta started his educational journey from Satish Chandra Prathamik Vidyalay, a primary school in his village. Then he went to Udaynarayanpur Sarada Charan Institution for his higher school studies. In the year 2006, Sengupta moved to Kolkata to earn a bachelor degree under Calcutta University, but in the second year of his degree course, he decided to enter into Tollywood industry and became a dropout by choice.

Career

2008 - 2011: Sengupta worked as an assistant director in various non fiction Bengali television projects like Fatafati filmy fight for Etv Bangla, The Match for Mahuaa Bangla, Bindas Para for Rupasi Bangla and Selam Memsaheb for Sananda TV.

2012 - 2016: Sengupta worked as a reality director in various Bengali television reality shows like Jhalak Dikhlaja Bangla for Colors Bangla, Ticket to honeymoon for Rupasi Bangla, Jayo Hey for Kolkata Police, Great Music Gurukul for Colors Bangla, Egiye Bangla for Govt of West Bengal, Songe Srijit a talk show hosted by Srijit Mukherjee for colors Bangla.

2017 - 2020: In this years, Sengupta worked as an individual writer and director in multiple projects. He made his first short film Be the change (2017)[8] which got the official selection at Kolkata International Film Festival that year. Then he completed his first documentary The Geocentric Man (2019)[9] on a self acclaimed scientist from Kolkata. This documentary was released in hoichoi tv. After that Sengupta completed the most promising documentary of his career titled I Am Joyita (2020)[10] on India's first transgender judge. It was released in hoichoi tv at the republic day. Also this documentary made it's world satellite premiere on the prestigious National Geographic Channel (2022)[11] as a part pride month celebration. This time Sengupta made his acting debut in Kaushik Ganguly's National Award winning film Bishorjan (2017)[12] co-starring with Abir Chatterjee and Jaya Ehesan.

2021 - 2022 (present): This time Sengupta directed his second short film Chupkatha (2021)[13] acted by Rahul Arunoday Banerjee and Basabdatta Chatterjee which was released in Addatimes. Then Sengupta made his first experimental feature film Mrityupathojatri (2022)[14] acted by Rahul Arunoday Banerjee which was released in the cinemas of West Bengal.
