Etymology

The history of the societies in the Himalayan region from Jammu to Himachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh[8] to Uttarakhand has a similar pattern, where many small kingdoms were spread over hills and small valleys[9]. To be more precise, these kingdoms were rather fortified villages of warrior-landlords known as Thakurs and Ranas[10]. Most of the hill Rajputs were often compared to snakes[11], eagles etc. because like them they also did not like slavery and after getting injured, they used to attack again.

These Feudal Lords were Rajputs by lineage[12]. Most of Rajput groups in this region have origin in these kingdoms, the name of which became the name of their clan. Indeed, the same is true for the Sarmal[13][14] clan, which has its origins in the Sauram hills of the Durgar[15] region of Samba district in Jammu and Kashmir. The family of Rajputs of Sauram[16] region then came to be known as Sarmal who were Suryavanshi Kshatriyas.

Demographics

Most of them are concentrated in the Samba District of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from this, Jammu, Kathua, Doda, Katra, Bhaderwah and also scattered in neighboring states like Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
