Sarah Sackman is a British Labour Party politician and barrister. She practices public, planning and environmental law. She stood as the parliamentary candidate for Finchley and Golders Green at the 2015 general election.[1] She is the current parliamentary candidate for Labour in Finchley and Golders Green for the next General Election.[2]

Early life and education

Sackman was born in North London and raised in Finchley and Golders Green.[3] She studied History at Queens' College, Cambridge where she graduated with a First and then did a Graduate Diploma in Law at City, University of London.[4] In 2010 she was awarded the Frank Knox scholarship to study at Harvard Law School where she took her LLM.[5]

Career

Sarah Sackman is a barrister at the Matrix, London where she has practised since August 2021. Her legal expertise focuses on election, planning, local government, environment, rating administrative law and human rights.[6] She previously practised for over 10 years at Francis Taylor Building specialising in planning and environmental law.[7]

She has acted for Government, public bodies, local authorities, NGOs including Shelter and Client Earth as well as local residents.

In 2008, she served as a foreign law judicial clerk at the Supreme Court of Israel, Jerusalem.[6] In 2013 she delivered human rights training at the British Council in Yangon, Burma.

Sackman has been a visiting lecturer since 2012 at the London School of Economics Cities She has also taught law at UCL and City University. Programme where she teaches a course on urban politics and public law.[5] She has also taught law at UCL and City University.

She was a volunteer at Toynbee Hall Free Legal Advice Center. She has also written articles extensively on justice, housing and the environment for the Guardian and the Financial Times.[8][9]

Political career

Sackman was the Labour party's parliamentary candidate in the 2015 general election for Finchley and Golders Green. She lost the seat though the percentage vote share for Labour rose by 6% from the 2010 election.[10] [11] [2]

She has been vice chair of the Jewish Labour Movement since 2015.[12]

Sackman was an active member of the campaign to Friern Barnet Library in 2012 and successfully help negotiate with Barnet Council for it to be maintained as a community run library.[13]

On November 6th 2022, she was selected by local party members as the prospective parliamentary candidate for Finchley and Golders Green at the next general election, likely to take place in 2024.[14] [15]

Personal life

Sarah Sackman is Jewish. She lives in London with her two children her husband who is also a lawyer.[12]
