Sarah Boone (born October 10, 1977) is a Florida woman known for her alleged involvement in the second-degree murder of her former boyfriend, Jorge Torres Jr. The accusation stems from the claim that she suffocated him inside a zipped suitcase, earning her the infamous epithet of "The Suitcase Killer." The case has since gained widespread notoriety due to the peculiar nature of the crime, as well as the subsequent interrogations that followed. Presently, her trial is set for October 2023.

Domestic abuse claims

The Boone-Torres relationship is marred by a lengthy history of domestic violence, leading to multiple legal proceedings and charges against both parties.

  1. July 2018 Incident: In July 2018, Boone was charged with battery by strangulation. According to court documents, Boone claimed self-defense, stating that Torres had dragged her upstairs and kicked her in the right eye after seeing her talking to another man at a bar. In contrast, Torres claimed that Boone had initiated the altercation by attempting to strangle him, and he acted out of self-defense to protect himself from incapacitation. Deputies were unable to determine the primary aggressor, resulting in unresolved legal consequences.[1]
  2. September 2019 Incident: In 2019, Torres faced three counts of battery. In September of the same year, he was arrested again following an accusation by Boone that he punched her in the left ear.[1]
  3. January 2020 911 Call: On January 2020, only a month before the murder, Boone made another 911 call reporting an incident of domestic violence. She alleged that Torres had struck her with a curtain rod. In a subsequent interview, Boone mentioned that Torres had been attending anger management classes, indicating a potential attempt at rehabilitation.

Given the recurring pattern of domestic violence in the Boone-Torres relationship, it is anticipated that Boone's defense attorney will invoke the battered woman defense during the upcoming trial. The battered woman defense is a legal strategy where the defendant claims to have been a victim of prolonged physical, emotional, or psychological abuse, which led them to act in self-defense or commit a crime.

Attack on Jorge Torres Jr.

In her original account of events, Boone claimed that the couple had been painting when Torres suggested they play a game of “hide-and-seek”. According to Boone, Torres willingly climbed into a suitcase while hiding when Boone zipped it up as a joke. Later, Boone attributed her lack of recollection to intoxication and claimed that she had gone upstairs, inadvertently forgetting about Torres and resulting in his unintended death.

However, a video retrieved from Sarah Boone's phone contradicts her account. The footage, timestamped at 11:12 pm, captures Jorge Torres Jr. inside the suitcase while Boone can be heard laughing and using profanities towards him. During the video, Torres is heard expressing difficulty breathing, while Boone repeatedly says "for everything you've done to me." Approximately eleven minutes later, another video depicts the suitcase flipped over in a different area of the apartment. When confronted with this evidence by investigators, Boone asserted that she had not fully zipped up the suitcase, implying that the incident was an accidental occurrence. Nevertheless, video evidence disputes this claim.[2]

Investigation

During the autopsy, it was discovered that Jorge Torres Jr. had sustained various injuries on the night of his death, including injuries to his left shoulder, contusions on his lip and neck, and bruising on his head and skull. When questioned by investigators, Boone asserted that the shoulder injuries resulted from Torres falling off her son's bike and claimed that he was “notorious for running into walls". Additionally, Boone attributed the cuts found on his body to consensual sexual activity.[3]
