Santiago Pani, (born 31 March 1990), is a Mexican Artist currently living and working in Leiderdorp, the Netherlands. He was born in Mexico City and raised in Tequisquiapan, where he grew up surrounded by artists. He is the son of Mexican Painter, Knut Pani.[1] and grandson of architect Mario Pani [2]
Education and Career
Pani studied art in Mexico City at ENPEG[2] [3](Esquela Nacional de Pintura Escultura y Grabado), better known as La Esmeralda, between 2009-2013, where his focus was printmaking. During this period, he had the opportunity to work under the tutelage of visual artist Carla Rippey. His first solo exhibition, titled “Registro de Un Momento”, took place in 2012, at the Casa Municipal de Cultura in Zacatecas Mexico[4]. Since then, Pani has gone on to participate in numerous solo and group exhibitions in several cities across the globe as well as participating in Art fairs in Lisbon, Amsterdam, Mexico City, and New York City, amongst other places [3]. In 2014, Pani attended an artist residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum[2] in Belgium, which was a pivotal moment in his career. This experience made him realize that he wanted to live in an environment where he could continuously collaborate with other creatives, and as a result, in April 2015, he went on to co-found his first artist residence and gallery under the name of “La Nave” [2]in Madrid. The opening of the residence/gallery was inaugurated with solo exhibitions from four artists: Knut Pani, Vincente Vertiz, Miguel Ezpania, and Santiago Pani himself[5]. In 2017, this project was relocated to Leiderdorp in the Netherlands and launched in collaboration with PAC (Plataforma de Arte Contemporaneo) under the new name of “Arthouse Holland”[6]. This project paved the way for more collaborations which ultimately led Pani to also co-found “Arthouse” – an artist initiative that operates projects such as the Arthouse 1606 residency, sketchx4, and A-lab[7]. These projects are collectively aimed to promote collaborative efforts and create meaningful real-life encounters through the organization of physical meetings between international artists. The outcome of these projects has also been shared with a worldwide audience through exhibitions such as “Intuición Errante”[8] which was held at the Querétaro Museum of Art (maQro), in November of 2020. Here, the result of thirty days of continuous work of four different artists, (including Pani himself), during the Arthouse 1606 residency was presented. In the present-day, Arthouse has two residencies under its wing, which were co-founded and are currently co-operated with Manon van der Geest; the previously mentioned Arthouse Holland, as well as Arthouse Pani (MX), which was later opened in 2020, in Tequisquiapan in Mexico[7].
Work
Since very early in his career, Santiago had a clear idea of what he wanted to accomplish, and thus, over the years he has been constantly searching for a pictorial language that can be recognized as his own. His work frequently blurs the line between realism and abstraction, as he likes to oscillate between both the extreme ends of the spectrum[9]. His practice is extremely diverse, and includes painting, drawing, printing methods[2] as well as fashion, jewelry design and recently also new technologies, namely within the NFT sphere[9] with the collaborative project “Peyote Ugly”, which was launched on Markers Place[10][11][12] He has been influenced by the works of Lucian Freud, Dutch sculptor Theo Jansen as well as his own father, Knut Pani. His inspiration, which is reflected in different bodies of work produced over the years of his career, ranges from the minute world of entomology to the vastness of the cosmos[3]. In the earlier stages of his career, Pani worked mainly with monotyping. His first body of work, entitled Macrocosmos, was inspired by constellations and celestial bodies. His focus then shifted to entomology and illustration where he found great interest in insects and marine life which led to his second body of work Microcosmos. During this period, he was also inspired to create “Welcome to my Mind”[13][14] which featured a limited series of clothing pieces that combined art and fashion. Here, he takes the viewer on an introspective journey and search through creatures that are close and familiar to him, with the octopus as the main character. Pani’s most recent body of work, entitled “Personal Universe”[1] has been in the works for over a decade. Inspired by the anonymous characters and memories of people stored in the subconscious, Santiago has been creating a vast body of recognizable work featuring mixed-media paintings, sculptures, and varied digital works, surrounding this idea. Pani finds himself connected to the concept that the memories of people that are stored in our subconscious are sometimes recalled by our minds to interact and influence our story once again[3]. These experiences shape the future and individuality of each person, building character over time. His connection to these concepts makes the production of his pieces a very organic and visceral process.
