Sanjoy K. Bhattacharya, Ph.D. is a Professor of Opthalmology and Research Scientist at the University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute [1]. He is the founding director of the Miami Integrative Metabolomics Research Center and also the director of the Ophthalmology Mass Spectrometry Core Facility/Shared Instrument Facility. His further serves as Chair of the Miller School of Medicine Medical Council [2]. Although he has experience in particle physics and collisions [3] [4], his current main focus is on curing multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, and neurodegenerative ocular diseases [5]. Dr. Bhattacharya has contributed to multiple global research efforts and has continued collaborations with researchers ranging from Chile to Germany [6].

Research projects

RR2K: Regeneration and Reinnervation to Knowledge

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Bhattacharya assembled a team of high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, professors and staff scientists to generate an actionable intelligence database for neural regeneration and reinvention. The team is working on generating a web-database of the related literature spanning centuries and continents. This stems from his prior work in reinnervation and regeneration of the optic nerve.

Metabolomics of Ocular Anomalies

In 2019, Dr. Bhattachrya's team worked on the metabolomics of glaucoma and Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome (PEX). The project entailed using Machine and Deep Learning methods for predictive analytics with metabolites [7].

Lipidomics of the Eye

Bhattacharya has also published on the lipid composition of the eye. His laboratory uses many forms of spectrometry including Mass Spectrometry (MS), Isotopic Ratio Outlier Analysis (IROA), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to quantify and identify the lipidome of the eye.
