Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman (born 2 February 1965) is a retired Nigerian Army officer who served as Director of Army Public Relations from 2015 to 2019. He is known for his role in shaping the Nigerian Army's communication strategies during counterinsurgency operations.[1]

Early Life and Education

Usman was born in Kukasheka, Katsina State. He attended Kukasheka Primary School and Government Secondary School Kafanchan. He enlisted in the Nigerian Army in 1983 and later earned a bachelor's degree in Mass Communication from Bayero University Kano and a masters degree in Media, Peace, and Conflict Studies from the University for Peace Costa Rica.[2] He completed senior military training at Nigerias National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in 2018.[3]

Military career

Usman held multiple roles in public relations and strategic communication within the Nigerian Army. Key appointments included:

  • Army Public Relations Officer for the Guards Brigade (1999–2002)
  • Public Relations Officer to the Chief of Army Staff Nigeria (2007–2010)
  • Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 1st Division (2012–2014)
  • Director of Army Public Relations (2015–2019)

He participated in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Sierra Leone (2002–2003) and Ethiopia / [ Eritrea (2005–2006). During his tenure as army spokesperson, he managed media relations during operations against Boko Haram and in the Niger Delta..[4]

Post-retirement activities

After retiring in 2019, Usman became a consultant at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre and serves on the governing council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations. He also engages in agricultural business through Mahangi Farms.[5]

Awards and recognition

Usman received military honors including the Corps Medal of Honour and United Nations medals for his peacekeeping service. He is a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and the African Public Relations Association.[6]

Personal life

Usman is married to Hajiya Hadiza SK Usman, with whom he has six children.[7]
