Sandeep Aggarwal is an Indian entrepreneur, angel investor, and the current Chief Executive Officer of Droom Technology Pvt. Ltd. Sandeep founded two startups – Shopclues, an online-managed marketplace in 2010, and Droom, an online automobile marketplace in 2014. Prior to the entrepreneurship journey, Sandeep was a Wall Street Analyst in San Francisco.[1][2] In late 2020, Sandeep authored a book titled 'Fall Again Rise Again', an autobiography of Sandeep Aggarwal.[3]

Personal Life

Sandeep was born and raised in Chandigarh, India. He married Radhika Ghai and got divorced in 2018. He has two sons Ahaan Aggarwal and Arjit Aggarwal. In 2020, Sandeep got married to Upasana S. Aggarwal.[4][5]

Education & Career

Sandeep completed his early education from SD Model School in Karnal and graduated from Kurukshetra University. He is an alumnus of Dayal Singh College in Karnal, graduating the batch of 1987-92, post which he attended Devi Ahilya University for Masters in Finance in Indore (1994-96).[6] In 1999, Sandeep shifted to the USA to pursue MBA from Washington University in St. Louis. He worked with Schwab.com in San Francisco and then at Microsoft’s corporate HeadQuarters at Redmond (Washington) in strategy and financial planning roles.[7]

Philanthropy

Sandeep created Sandeep Aggarwal Foundation to address development challenges of India. The foundation collaborated with Umeed Foundation and Zoe Mission for helping and uplifting the society.[8][9]

Controversies

In July 2014, Sandeep was accused of insider trading charges in New York and arrested by FBI agents in San Jose, California[10] . In Feb 2020, United States Department of Justice (DoJ) dropped all charges against Sandeep Aggarwal in the insider-trading case as US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reached a settlement with Aggarwal.[11]

Investments

In 2016, he invested in seven early-stage firms in India and overseas namely Dekoruma, Wydr, Shopsity, Data Guise, Give Club, Duriana and Curo Healthcare. To make investments, he set up his family office named Digital Route. The investments he made as an angel investor was from his personal wealth.[12] In 2017, he backed a content startup WittyFeed, and Israel & US-based venture capital fund LionBird Venture.[13] In 2020, he invested in the seed round funding for a training company, Junoon and influencer marketing startup ClanConnect.ai.[14]

Awards

  • In December 2015, Sandeep was awarded with "Top 50 Entrepreneur Award" by The Smart CEO.[15]
  • In May 2016, he was recognized as "AsiaOne Person of the Year" by URS International.[16]
  • In July 2017, he was ranked as one of the top 30 Influential Business Leaders by Insights Success.[17]
  • In February 2018, Haryana Gaurav Awards recognized Sandeep Aggarwal as the "Digital Entrepreneur of the Year".
  • In February 2018, Sandeep was awarded as "Business Leader of the Year" by World Federation of Marketing Professionals.
  • In March 2018, AdTech recognized him as "DigiXX Person of the Year".[18]
  • In September 2018, he received an award "Entrepreneur of the Year" by ASSOCHAM India.
