Sana Cissokho is a Senegalese griot, kora virtuoso, musician, singer, composer, speaker and entrepreneur. He comes from a great lineage of kora masters such as Ballaké Sissoko, Ablaye Cissoko, Toumani Diabaté and Sona Jobarteh.
Biography
Sana Cissokho's[1] long line family tradition of Dialys or Griots are from the Mandinka heritage. Dating back 70 generations of griots preceding him in a patrilineal line - Cissokho's parents Lamine Sissoko and Ndeye Diongtang Diabaté are both well respected Dialys in Senegal, West Africa. He learned to play the kora from an early age when he was just 4 years old, with his father and his older siblings: Mamadou Cissokho and Atab Cissokho which led him to become an outstanding kora master of his generation.
Born in Bignona, Casamance in the southern region of Senegal known from its rich cultural tradition and ethnic diversity. Sana Cissokho was exposed from an earlier age to learn different languages. Meanwhile in the Mandinka tradition he learned the importance of knowing his neighbor's language as a sign of respect, Sana speaks mandinka also malinke, bambara, pulaar, diola, wolof as well as French, English, Portuguese and Spanish.
He studied in the faculty of letters of the University Cheikh Anta Diop where he learned Portuguese and incremented his polyglot skills.
As a griot - Sana Cissokho is an international speaker[2] and teaches[3] about the Mandinka history and culture. During the Covid lock down he gave virtual speeches widely broadcasted in countries like Argentina, India, Italy, Ghana and Brazil[4] with many different groups[5] such as Afrolaje [6], Afrikasonora and Ketykim Farafina to name a few.
Music
In 2023, he performed at Sauti Za Busara Festival a renowned African music festival[7], held every year in February in Zanzibar, Tanzania.
Since 2020 Sana Cissokho has released a few singles[8] and is in the works of his debut album.
