San Salvador (also known as "Holy Saviour") is the capital and biggest city of El Salvador, as well as the administrative centre of the country's namesake department. It serves as the country's political, cultural, educational, and economical focal point, among other things. Approximately 2,404,097 people live in San Salvador's Metropolitan Area (which includes both the capital and 13 of the city's municipalities).

Central America's financial capital, San Salvador, is a major international financial centre. There are numerous governmental institutions in San Salvador, including the Concejo de Ministros de El Salvador (El Salvador's Council of Ministers), La Asamblea Legislativa (El Salvador's Legislative Assembly), the Corte Suprema de Justicia (El Salvador's Supreme Court), and other judicial and judicial-related institutions, as well as the official residence of the president of the Republic. San Salvador is located in the Salvadoran highlands, surrounded by volcanoes and prone to earthquakes, and it is the capital of the country of El Salvador. Evangelicals, Mormons, Baptists, and Pentecostals are among the religious groups that call the city home, as are the Catholic Archdiocese and a large number of Protestant denominations. With the second biggest Jewish population in Central America and a tiny Muslim community, San Salvador is a popular tourist destination.

Various regional and international athletic, political, and social events have taken place in San Salvador, including the Pan American Games. The Central American and Caribbean Games were held there twice, first (1935) and again (2002), as well as the Central American Games in 1977 and 1994, and the Miss Universe pageant in 1975. San Salvador was also the site of the 18th Ibero-American Summit, which took place from October 29–31, 2008, and was the most significant sociopolitical event in the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world. The Central American Integration System (SICA) is based in San Salvador and maintains its headquarters there. The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) is based in San Salvador, as is the Central American Development Bank (CADB).
