San Juan Capistrano is a city in Orange County, California, that is situated along the Orange Coast. Its name translates to "St. John of Capistrano" from its Spanish name. At the time of the census in 2010, there were 34,593 people living there.

St. Junipero Serra erected Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1776, which is considered to be the beginning of the Spanish settlement of San Juan Capistrano. The earthquake that occurred in Capistrano in 1812 caused extensive damage, which contributed to the demise of the municipality. The mission community was formally upgraded to the status of a town and given the name San Juan de Argüello after the Mexican government passed an act in 1833 to secularise the country. The American Conquest of California resulted in San Juan remaining a tiny, rural town until the 20th century; the restoration of the mission during the 1910s and 1920s converted the town into a popular tourist destination and a setting for Hollywood films.

An Indigenous Californian nation known as the Acjachemen also went by the name Juaneos, and they were the people that lived in this area. They had been living in the region for anywhere between 9,000 and 10,000 years.
