Dr Samir Shah, Order of the British Empire (born 29 January 1952) is a British television and radio executive. He has worked for London Weekend Television, the BBC and is the Chief Executive of United Kingdom based Juniper, a British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominated and Royal Television Society award-winning Independent Television & Radio production company.[1][2]

Broadcasting

Samir Shah joined London Weekend Television in 1979.[3] In 1987, he was appointed BBC’s head of television current affairs and, from 1994 to 1998[4], ran the BBC’s political journalism. At the BBC Shah was responsible for many critically-acclaimed programmes including the landmark series, Thatcher: The Downing Street Years.[5] Since 1998, Shah has owned and run Juniper[6]. Its award winning programmes have been broadcast on the BBC, Channel 4, National Geographic, Discovery, Inc., TLC (TV network), Netflix.[7] Television programmes include The Great Plague (2001)[8], Invitation to a Hanging (2003)[9], Bare Knuckle Boxer (2003)[10], The Qur’an (2008)[11], Iraq the reckoning (2004)[12], Sir Alex Ferguson: Secrets of Success (2015)[13], The Jesus Mysteries (2014)[14], Theresa Vs Boris (2017)[15], This Week (2003 TV programme). Radio programmes include Feedback (radio series), Small Island or Global Britain (2021)[16], Hidden History of the (Mantelpiece, Corridor, Window, Staircase)(2017-), Secret History of School(2019)[17].

The Guardian on 27 June 2008 referred to Shah as “one of the most successful figures in modern British broadcasting”[18].

Early Life & Education

Samir Shah was born in Aurangabad, India. He moved to England in 1960 and attended Latymer Upper School in West London. He has a Geography degree from University of Hull and a Doctorate from University of Oxford (St Catherine's College, Oxford)[19].

Boards & Appointments

Arts and Heritage: Deputy Chair (2012-2014) & Trustee (2005-2014) of the Victoria and Albert Museum; Chair of the Museum of the Home (2014-); member of the Cultural Recovery Board (2020-2021)[20]; and of the Heritage Advisory Board (2020)[21].

Media: Non-Executive Director of the BBC Board (2007-2010)[22]; member of the Future of public service broadcasting (2021); on the RTS Journalism Awards Committee, (2015 – 2017)[23]; Board member, BAFTA[24]; Chair of One World Media (2019 -)[25].

Multicultural: Commissioner on Government Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities; Chair of the Runnymede Trust (1999-2009); Member, PM’s Holocaust Commission (2014 – 2015).

Academic: 2019 Visiting Professor of Creative Media, University of Oxford (Faculty of English), 2006 - 2017 Special Professor, University of Nottingham[26][27]

Honours

1999 - Order of the British Empire for services to Equal opportunities in Broadcasting[28]

2002 - Elected Fellow of the Royal Television Society[29]
