Sam Richter is an American author and professional speaker known for his work on sales intelligence and business research techniques. His book Take the Cold Out of Cold Calling (2008) addresses web-based research methods for sales professionals and has been cited in works by authors including Harvey Mackay, Jeb Blount, Jeffrey Gitomer, and Mark Hunter.[1][2][3][4]

Early life and education

Richter grew up in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, and graduated from St. Louis Park High School.[5] He earned a degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota, where he was a letterwinner on the varsity football team.[6]

Career

Richter began his career at Fallon McElligott Rice (now Fallon Worldwide) and later worked as an advertising writer and creative director at other Twin Cities agencies. He served as a group director at Weber Shandwick and as an executive at Digital River, where he worked on the eBot software download program, a 2000 CODiE Award recipient.[7] In 2003, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal named him to its Forty Under 40 list,[8] and in 2007, he was a finalist for Inc. magazine's Entrepreneur of the Year award.[9]

From the mid-2000s to late 2000s, Richter served as president of the James J. Hill Reference Library in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Star Tribune reported on the library's expansion of online programs during his tenure.[10] He subsequently served as chief marketing officer at Actifi, a financial advisory technology company.[11]

Speaking and media coverage

In 2008, CNN's Fortune Small Business published a feature on Richter's web search techniques for finding sales leads and business intelligence.[12] That same year, BusinessWeek featured his search methods in an article on entrepreneurship.[13] His techniques have also been covered in Entrepreneur,[14] Forbes,[15] and trade publications including Ted Magazine[16] and Foodservice Consultant.[17]

Richter received the Certified Speaking Professional designation from the National Speakers Association in 2014.[18] He was inducted into the Minnesota Speakers Hall of Fame in 2017[19] and the National Speakers Association Hall of Fame (CPAE) in 2020.[20] In 2025, he received the Minnesota Professional Speakers Association Lifetime Achievement Award.[21]
