Sam Lisenco (born c. 1984) is an American film and television production designer. He is known for his work on the films Uncut Gems, Judas and the Black Messiah, Frances Ha, Eighth Grade, Good Time, Kajillionaire, and the television series The Bear.
Career
Lisenco began his collaboration with filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie while studying film at Boston University.[1] After graduating, he moved to New York City and worked with independent filmmakers including Greta Gerwig and Lena Dunham.[2]
Lisenco has designed multiple critically acclaimed independent films, including Frances Ha (2012), Good Time (2017), Eighth Grade (2018), Uncut Gems (2019), Kajillionaire (2020), Judas and the Black Messiah (2021), and May December (2023).[1]
His production design for Uncut Gems received extensive critical attention.[3] Vanity Fair and GQ examined his reconstruction of the Diamond District through detailed research and hyper-specific prop work.[4][5] Architectural Digest also covered his design approach to the film.[6] Variety profiled his work on Kajillionaire and its distinct visual style.[7]
In television, Lisenco received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Program (Half-Hour) for his work on the pilot episode of The Bear.[8]
Other work
Lisenco also works in commercial and interior design. His redesign of the Montague Diner in Brooklyn received coverage from Time Out New York and Grub Street, with Time Out ranking it the "#1 diner in New York City" in 2024.[9][10]
