Dr. Sae-Hoon Stan Chung (born November 2, 1962) is a Korean-Canadian academic administrator, Indigenous governance advisor, and author. He has held senior leadership roles in Canadian post-secondary education.[1][2] and has contributed to initiatives related to Indigenous self-determination[3], decolonization, and the arts[4][5]

Early Life and Education

Sae-Hoon Stan Chung was born in Seoul, South Korea, on November 2, 1962. He immigrated to Canada as a child and pursued his education in British Columbia.[6] He received a Ph.D. in Performance Studies from the University of British Columbia in 2015. His doctoral research explored intersections between neuroscience, artificial intelligence, improvisation, and the work of composer Pauline Oliveros.[7]

Academic and Administrative Career

Chung has held academic and senior leadership roles at several Canadian post-secondary institutions. He served as Dean of Arts and Sciences at Camosun College, and Vice-President of Academic and Research at College of the Rockies, and Red River College.[8]

In June 2024, Chung was appointed Interim Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the ʔaq̓am First Nation. This appointment followed more than a decade of work with Ktunaxa communities, including advisory roles to the Ktunaxa Nation Council and its member bands: ʔaq̓am, ʔakisq̓nuk, Yaqan Nukiy, and Yaq̓it ʔa·knuqⱡiʔit.[5]

Public Service and Leadership Roles

Chair of the British Columbia Arts Council

Chung was appointed to the BC Arts Council in August 2020 and reappointed in 2023. He currently serves as Chair of the Council, providing oversight and strategic leadership aimed at promoting equitable support for artists and arts organizations across the province.[9][10]

Board Member, Royal BC Museum (RBCM)

In 2025, Chung was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Royal BC Museum, where he contributes to the governance and people and culture committees.[11][12]

Indigenous Governance and Equity Advising

Chung serves as a senior advisor to the Ktunaxa Nation Council, where he contributes to strategic initiatives related to decolonization, equity, and Indigenous self-determination.[13] Nationally, he also serves as Chief Equity Advisor for Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL), working to enhance equity within experiential education programs.[14]

Research and Publications

Chung’s scholarship focuses on decolonization, Indigenist pedagogy, and intercultural education. His research often employs methodologies such as autoethnography and community-based collaboration.

Public Engagement

From approximately 2008 to 2018, Chung authored the "Global Citizen" column in the Kelowna Daily Courier, which addressed topics such as reconciliation, race, mindfulness, gender equity, and environmental sustainability.[19] Many of these essays were later compiled into his published books.[20]

Chung is also active as a public speaker, delivering keynote addresses and workshops across Canada on topics related to intercultural learning, reconciliation, and social innovation.
