Saddek Benkada, (in Arabic صادق بن قادة), born September 25, 1948 in Oran (Algeria), is an Algerian sociologist and historian. He was President of the People's Communal Assembly of Oran (Mayor) from December 9, 2007 to November 21, 2010[1] [2].

Biography

Studies

Saddek Benkada was born in 1948 in Oran (Algeria). From an early age, he frequented Madrasat El Falah in the popular district of Mdina Jdida. He continued his primary and secondary studies at the Louis Lumière primary school (now Ali Boumendjel) and at the Lamoricière high school (Annex of Gambetta) (now Hammou Boutlélis).

In 1973 he obtained a degree in sociology from the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences of the University of Oran.

He performed his national service between November 1974 and March 1977, first assigned to the training school for reserve officers in Blida, then as chief of staff of the Wali of Sidi-Bel-Abbes for three months. He then spent most of his national service as secretary general of the communal administration of the APC of Sidi-Bel-Abbes, between July 1975 and March 1977.

In 1988, he holds a diploma of in-depth studies (DEA) in urban sociology, on urban space and social structures in Oran from 1792 to 1831. In 1990, he obtained a specialized post-graduation diploma (DPGS), on the socio-demographic characteristics and geographical mobility of temporary labor: The case of the Enterprise of Management of the Industrial Zone of Arzew ( EGZIA) 1986-1989.

In 2002, he defended his master's thesis on urban development and repopulation policies in Oran (1831-1891): a model of colonial urban modernity.

In 2008, during his mandate at the People's Communal Assembly of Oran, he defended his doctoral thesis in urban sociology, “ORAN 1732-1912 Analytical essay on the historical transition of an Algerian city towards urban modernity."

Professional and academic career

He began his professional career in 1973, as an executive at the Algerian oil and gas company SONATRACH (Industrial Zone of Arzew). Following the reorganization of SONATRACH from 1980, he held several positions of responsibility within the Arzew Industrial Zone Management Company (EGZIA), a subsidiary of the SONATRACH Group, until his retirement. anticipated in 2006. In parallel to his activities as project manager at EGZIA, he developed a research project on the history of oil companies in Algeria, in particular SONATRACH[3].

From 1990, he also gave courses in sociology, demography and urban history at the Institute of Architecture of the University of Science and Technology of Oran (U.S.T.O.). He joined the National Center for Research in Social and Cultural Anthropology (CRASC) from its creation in 1992 as an associate researcher (1992-2005), before becoming a permanent researcher (2006-2017), and deputy director of the editorial board of the journal Insanyat edited by CRASC. He is currently an associate researcher and member of the editorial board of the journal Insaniyat, in which he has published numerous articles since its creation. He is also a member of the editorial board of the bulletin of the society of geography and archeology of Oran, and member of the editorial board of the African Review of Books.

Associative activist and founding member of several memorial and cultural associations: Society of Geography and Archeology of Oran, Emir Abdelkader Foundation, Memory of the Mediterranean association. Since December 2012, he has been a member of the scientific committee of the Center for Maghrebian Studies in Algeria (C.E.M.A.). Oran constitutes as an object of research, its privileged "laboratory", alongside its work on the evolution of the urban landscape in Algeria, historical demography and historical and cultural anthropology. As such, many organizations, associations and consultancies call on him, as a lecturer, consultant or expert for everything related to historical or heritage issues of the city of Oran Author of several articles published in journals national and international, and several contributions in collective works. Participates in numerous scientific congresses in Algeria and abroad.

Currently, he is conducting research on the theme of political violence in Oran in the period between 1961 and 1962.
