Sachin Yashwant Shigwan (born February 11, 1983) is an Indian social entrepreneur recognised as the "Solar Man of India" for his pioneering work in rural electrification through solar energy. He is the founder and director of Green India Initiative.[1]

Early life and education

Sachin Shigwan commenced his educational journey at Sane Guruji Aarogya Mandir in Mumbai, completing his early schooling. He later pursued a degree in commerce at Mumbai University. Acknowledging the importance of social entrepreneurship, he furthered his education by obtaining an MBA in Social Entrepreneurship from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) in Mumbai.[2]

Family background

Shigwan hails from a middle-class family and resides with his family, including his mother, younger brother, sister-in-law, and niece. His mother played a significant role in supporting his education and career, despite limited formal education and work experience. Her trust in Sachin's decisions contributed to his achievements.

Career and achievements

Shigwan's career is marked by his commitment to rural development and solar electrification. In 2009, he joined the Rotary club and engaged in community development initiatives in rural villages. Observing that rural students relied on kerosene lamps for studying, he initiated efforts to provide clean and reliable solar power to underserved communities. This led to the establishment of Green India Initiative Pvt. Ltd., dedicated to rural electrification through solar energy.[3]

Shigwan aims to illuminate 1000 villages by 2025 through his organization. They offer various solar solutions, including streetlights, water pump systems, water filtration systems, and solar cookers, improving rural lives.[4]
