Secure Digital (formally shortened as SD) is referred to as a non-volatile memory card format established by the SD Association (SDA) for usage in portable devices.

The standard, which was established in August 1999 as an enhancement over MultiMediaCards (MMCs) by a collaborative effort by SanDisk, Panasonic (Matsushita), and Toshiba, has now become the de facto standard in the industry. SD-3C, LLC was founded by the three firms as a vehicle for licencing and enforcing intellectual property rights connected with SD memory cards, SD host and auxiliary devices, and other related technologies.

The SD Association (SDA), a non-profit organisation founded by the corporations in January 2000 to promote and develop SD Card standards, was also established. SDA now has over 1,000 member firms. The SDA makes use of many trademarked logos owned and licenced by SD-3C to ensure that its requirements are followed and that users' devices are compatible with one another.
