S. M. Shahidul Islam (Bengali: এস. এম. শহীদুল ইসলাম) is a Bangladeshi police officer and medical doctor. He is trained in acupuncture and holds a PhD [1] in Pain & Paralysis. He currently serves as a Superintendent of Police (SP) and has been awarded the President Police Medal (PPM) [2] for his contributions to law enforcement, healthcare initiatives, and social service.
Early Life and Education
S. M. Shahidul Islam was born in 1972 in the village of Ratail under Kashiani Upazila, Gopalganj District, Bangladesh into a respected Muslim family. His father was the late Sheikh Mohammad Babar Ali and his mother’s name is Amena Begum. He is the fourth among eight siblings. From an early age, he was a meritorious student and a hardworking individual. Alongside his studies, he was also remarkably skilled in sports. For a long time, he has been working in two noble professions. He is a renowned acupuncture specialist [3] in Bangladesh and also serves as a Superintendent of Police (SP) in the Bangladesh Police, fulfilling his duties with dedication. He completed his MBBS from Tongji Medical University in China. Additionally, he received advanced training in acupuncture and gained significant expertise in the field. While working at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), he was recommended for the 23rd BCS under the Health Cadre (123rd position), and later he was also recommended for the 25th BCS under the Police Cadre, where he joined as an Assistant Superintendent of Police. He served as the founding director of the Drug Addiction Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Center [4] , operated under the World Bangladesh Police initiative.
Career
S.M. Shahidul Islam began his professional journey in the Bangladesh Police and rose through the ranks to become SP. He has served in various districts, contributing significantly to crime prevention, community policing and counter-narcotics operations.
Alongside his law enforcement career, S.M. Shahidul Islam is the chief visiting consultant in SUO XI Hospital (Acupuncture) [5], a hospital dedicated to Acupuncture Treatment and alternative medicine. His work has helped thousands of patients seek relief through medicine free treatments.

Activism and social work
Dr. S. M. Shahidul Islam has been actively engaged in social welfare, healthcare, and community development throughout his career. He is a founding member of both the Shoshi Foundation and the Shreyo Somaj Unnayan Sangstha, organizations that focus on education, health, and social support activities in Bangladesh. On 23 December 2022, he organized a medical camp in Madaripur [11] , offering free healthcare services to underprivileged communities. From June 2020 to January 2022, while serving as a Superintendent of Police, Dr. Islam was appointed Project Director [12] of the “OASIS” Drug Addiction Treatment & Rehabilitation Center and the proposed 250-bedded Dhaka Divisional Police Hospital under the Bangladesh Police Headquarters. These initiatives were designed to strengthen drug rehabilitation efforts and improve healthcare infrastructure for both police personnel and the general public.
