S. M. Lutful Kabir (born 7 January 1979) is a Bangladeshi microbiologist. He is working as a professor at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) and is the current provost of Shaheed Shamsul Haque Hall, BAU.[1]
Early life and education
Kabir earned his bachelor's and master's degree from the Faculty of Veterinary Science at BAU in 2002 and 2003, respectively. He was awarded his Ph.D. from the Osaka Prefecture University, Japan, in March 2011.[2]
Career
Kabir joined as a lecturer at the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene, BAU, in 2002. He was promoted to full professor in 2015.[1] He served as an associate director of the transport section of BAU, head of the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene, and current provost of Shaheed Shamsul Haque Hall, BAU.[2][3]
Memberships and journal editorial roles
Kabir is a member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and a life member of organizations such as the Bangladesh Veterinary Association, Krishibid Institution Bangladesh, Bangladesh Society for Veterinary Medicine, Bangladesh Society for Veterinary Education and Research, Bangladesh Society of Microbiologists, Bangladesh Society for Veterinary Microbiology and Public Health, Bangladesh Biosafety and Biosecurity Society, and Bangladesh Accreditation Forum.[4][5] He is the current Editor-in-Chief of the Asian Journal of Medical and Biological Research[6][7] and the Asian-Australasian Journal of Food Safety and Security.[8][9] He also served as an editor in the Bangladesh Journal of Microbiology.[10]
Organizational role
He was an elected member of the executive committee of Teachers’ Association, BAU.[11] Currently, he is serving as the president of Narsingdi Zila Chhatrakalyan Somittee, BAU.[12] He is the founder and chief scientific adviser of a Bangladesh-based non-profit scientific publisher (Ebu Press Ltd).[13]
Research works and discoveries
Kabir's primary research was focused on probiotics in the poultry industry;[14] later, he worked on method development to accurately identify Campylobacter species.[15] Majorly he works on animal, food, and environmental microbiology.[16][17][18][19] Additionally, he conducted research on antibiotic resistance in both animals and humans, and explored the use of probiotics in Bangladesh.[20][21][22] He discovered a piece of laboratory equipment for the easy and cheap detection of microbes.[23]
He published 115 scientific articles in different national and international journals, 25 conference papers, 137 conference proceedings, 1 book [24] and 3 book chapters with international publishers.[25][26][27] He submitted 327 sequence data for NCBI accession. He has completed 30 projects and is currently working on three projects. So far, he has supervised five Ph.D. students and 85 master's students in his carrier.[1][2]
