Born on 7th October 1913 in Veerapandi, Tiruppur district. Sundarambal came from a family with a background of activism, with her father Natchimuthu Goundar being a local leader.[1] Despite her privileged upbringing, Sundarambal was passionate about social service and the freedom struggle. During a public meeting, when Mahatma Gandhi appealed for donations to the freedom party, Sundarambal instantly offered her golden bangle. It was then that Gandhi urged her to actively participate in the non-violent resistance movement and to embrace the use of khadi.[1]

Sundarambal heeded Gandhi's words, participating in numerous protests during the freedom struggle. She was arrested, along with her newborn son, for her involvement in the 1941 Satyagraha protest and was imprisoned for three months in the Vellore Central Prison.[2] The following year, she took part in Gandhi's Quit India Movement and was again arrested, this time serving a seven-month sentence in the Vellore Prison.[2] In 1943, Sundarambal organized a major demonstration against the British government in Tirupur, which resulted in her third arrest and a three-month prison sentence.[2]

Post-Independence, Sundarambal remained committed to promoting farmers' welfare in the district and continued to organize rallies for this cause. She was arrested and imprisoned several times in the early 1970s. After meeting the renowned social reformer Vinoba Bhave, she founded the Angeripalayam orphanage in Tirupur.[2] She passed away on 20th August 2007.[2]
