São Paulo is a Brazilian city located in the country's Southeast Region. The municipality of So Paulo is the most populous city proper in Brazil, the Americas, the Western Hemisphere, and the Southern Hemisphere, as well as the world's fourth most populous city proper by population, according to the Global Alpha World Cities Index. Aside from that, the city of So Paulo is the most populous Portuguese-speaking city in the world. The city serves as the capital of the neighbouring state of So Paulo, which is both the most populated and the richest in Brazil. It has significant worldwide impact in the areas of business, banking, the arts, and entertainment. The Apostle Saint Paul of Tarsus is commemorated in the city's name. In terms of population, the city's metropolitan region, known as Greater So Paulo, is the most populated in Brazil and the 12th most populous on the planet. So Paulo Macrometropolis was formed as a result of the process of conurbation between the metropolitan areas surrounding Greater So Paulo (Campinas, So Paulo, Sorocaba, and Santos), resulting in a megalopolis with more than 30 million inhabitants, making it one of the world's most populous urban agglomerations.
The So Paulo Stock Exchange is located in the city, which has the biggest economy in Latin America and the Southern Hemisphere based on gross domestic product (GDP). Paulista Avenue is the heart of the city's economic activity. The city has the 11th largest GDP in the world, accounting for 10.7 percent of total Brazilian GDP and 36 percent of total goods and services production in the state of So Paulo. It is also home to 63 percent of established multinational corporations in Brazil, and it was responsible for 28 percent of national scientific production in 2005, as measured by the number of scientific papers published in journals.
