Russell Korobkin (born January 5, 1968) is the Richard C. Maxwell Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law, and a leading scholar in the fields of Negotiation, Behavioral Law and Economics, Health Care Law, and Contract Law.[1] He is the author of four books, including The Five Tool Negotiator: The Complete Guide to Bargaining Success,[2] and more than 50 scholarly articles.[3]
Early life and education
Korobkin was born in Los Angeles to Alvin and Marsha Korobkin and raised in San Diego. He received his B.A. in American Studies from Stanford University (’89) and his Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School (’94).[4]
Professional career
Between college and law school, Korobkin was an Associate Consultant with the management consulting firm, Bain & Company. After graduating from law school, he served as a law clerk to Judge James L. Buckley on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, and an Associate at the law firm of Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. He taught as an Assistant Professor and then Professor at the University of Illinois College of Law from 1996-2001, before moving the UCLA School of Law, where he has taught since. He was awarded the Richard C. Maxwell Chair in 2013, and promoted to the rank of Distinguished Professor in 2019. He has also taught as a full-time visiting professor at the University of Texas Law School (1999-2000) and Harvard Law School (2007). He teaches or has taught intensive Negotiation courses at law schools and business schools around the world, including in Germany, Israel, and Australia.[5] At UCLA School of Law, Korobkin teaches courses in Negotiation, Contracts, Health Care Law, Private Law, and Behavioral Law and Economics.[6] He served as the UCLA School of Law’s Vice Dean for Academic and Institutional Affairs from 2015-2019 and is currently the school’s Vice Dean for Graduate and Professional Education.[7]
Scholarship
Korobkin is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of Behavioral Law and Economics. His article (with Thomas S. Ulen), Law and Behavioral Science: Removing the Rationality Assumption from Law and Economics, was recognized as the most-cited law review article of the 21st century.[8]
He is also a leader in the study of Negotiation. His most recent book, The Five Tool Negotiator: The Complete Guide to Bargaining Success, will be published April 6, 2021.[9] Korobkin’s textbook on the field of negotiation, Negotiation Theory and Strategy, is in its third edition.[10] His textbook on the field of contract law, K: A Common Law Approach to Contracts (with Tracey E. George) is in its second edition.[11]
In the field of Health Care Law, Korobkin is best known for his book, Stem Cell Century: Law and Policy for a Breakthrough Technology.[12]
Korobkin is consistently recognized as one the most-cited scholars on the UCLA School of Law faculty.[13]
