Rudolf Kučera (born 26 November 1980) is a Czech historian. He is a director of the Masaryk Institute and Archives of the Czech Academy of Sciences and an associate professor of history at Charles University in Prague. He is also a permanent visiting professor at the University of Konstanz. He specializes in the modern history of East-Central Europe, history of war and violence, and history of labor and protest.

Biography and education

Rudolf Kučera was born on 26 November 1980 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He studied history at the Charles University in Prague, where he aquired his M. A. in 1998. After that he was accepted into a PhD program at the Free University of Berlin at the Berlin School for Comparative History of Europe (BKVGE),[1] where he was supervised by Philipp Ther and Jürgen Kocka. He completed his joint PhD at the Free University of Berlin and Charles University in Prague in 2008 and started to work at the Masaryk Institute and Archives of the Czech Academy Sciences.

In 2009–2010 Kučera performed a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Freibug Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau.[2] In 2013-2014 he was a fellow at the Imre Kertész Kolleg at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena.[3] After returning to Prague he became the deputy director for research at the Masaryk Institute and Archives. In 2017 he was named an asscociate professor of history at the Charles University in Prague and in 2019 he received an invitation as a visiting professor to the University of Vienna.[4]

In 2020, he became the director of the Masaryk Institute and Archives and since 2022 he is a permanent visiting professor at the University of Konstanz. Since 2023 he is also chairing the Scientific Advisory Board of the Czech Science Foundation.[5]
