William Ross Hastings is a Zimbabwean Scottish Systematic Theologian, now living in Canada. He is the Sangwoo Youtong Chee Professor of Theology, at Regent College, Vancouver.

Early Life

Hastings' parents were Scottish missionaries in Angola, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Hastings grew up in Scotland and in Zimbabwe. In Scotland he attended Prestwick Academy. In Zimbabwe, he attended Nettleton School, Cranborne Boys’ High School and Churchill School. During his school years he was a junior soccer player for the Mashonaland Province.[1] He won the coveted Wings award for soccer at Churchill School.[1] After his school years, he moved to South Africa where he did his undergraduate degree in chemistry at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.[2]

Higher Education

Hastings moved to Canada to do his Ph.D. in chemistry. His first Ph.D. was in Organometallic Chemistry from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. His Ph.D. thesis was titled Chemistry of Ruthenium Carbonyls: Carbon Oxide Hydrogenation by Catalysts derived from Ruthenium Carbonyls, 1987. His supervisor was Dr. M.C. Baird, with whom he co-authored several articles on Ruthenium Carbonyls. After gaining his Ph.D. in chemistry, Hastings pursued a Master’s degree in Doctrinal Theology at Regent College. His MA thesis was on the topic Repentance In The Evangelical Theological Heritage[3] under the supervision of Dr. J. I. Packer.[1] He pursued his second Ph.D. in Theology from St. Andrews University, Scotland under the supervision of Dr. Alan Torrance. His Ph.D. dissertation was titled, "'Giving Honour to the Spirit': A Critical Analysis and Evaluation of the Doctrine of Pneumatological Union in the Trinitarian Theology of Jonathan Edwards in Dialogue with Karl Barth."[4] This was revised, expanded, and published later as Jonathan Edwards and the Life of God: Toward an Evangelical Theology of Participation, and it aims to retrieve, by critically expounding and clarifying, the concept of participation in God, or theosis, in Edwards’s Trinitarian theology.[5]

Career

Hastings began his career as a high school chemistry teacher at St. Martin’s School in Rosettenville, Johannesburg, where he was also a coach for rugby, cricket and tennis.[2] Later he taught, and was the school headmaster, at Grainger Grammar School in Newcastle upon Tyne in England.[2] After obtaining his Ph.D. in chemistry, he taught at Trinity Western University whilst also fulfilling a pastorate at Westminster Chapel in Burnaby, BC.[2] He then pastored at Westview Bible Church in Montreal, and Peace Portal Alliance Church in Surrey, BC.[2] He started teaching theology at Regent College in 2006 and became the Sangwoo Youtong Chee Professor of Theology at Regent College, Vancouver in 2016. He is currently an ordained Anglican Priest serving as assistant to the rector at St. John’s Anglican Church, Vancouver, and will be assisting with the Anglican Studies program at Regent College.[6] During his career as a professor, Hastings has published numerous academic articles and books. The central theme of his publishing has been Trinitarian theology. He has written and lectured also in the interface of theology and science. He has been the chief investigator of two grants funded by the John Templeton Foundation as part of ReFaithing Science and Interface at Regent College.[7] He is also one of the series editors of Re-envisioning Reformed Dogmatics Series from Cascade books, Wipfandstock.[8]
