Roshdi Sarraj (lang-ar|رشدي سراج lrm; 1992 – 22 October 2023) was a Palestinian journalist, film-maker and co-founder of Ain Media Company.[1] He was killed by a missile from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the Gaza Strip on 13 October 2023, List of journalists killed in the 2023 Israel–Hamas war|while reporting in the context of the Israel–Hamas war.[1]
Life
Sarraj co-founded Ain Media along with Yaser Murtaja in 2012. The company has been a USAID program beneficiary since 2018.[2] Co-founder Murtaja died in 2018, having been shot by Israeli forces whilst covering the Great March of Return protests.[3]
Sarraj had previously worked for UNRWA as a photographer, and for various international media outlets, including Radio France Internationale, as a fixer. He had also worked with Amnesty International to produce a short film.[3] Ain Media had assisted foreign clients including Al-Jazeera and the BBC with various projects including aerial drone filming.[2]
Sarraj had been married since 2021 and had one child.[4] His father, Yahya al-Sarraj, is Gaza City's municipal mayor.[3]
Death
Sarraj had been working to cover air strikes on Gaza in the 2023 Israel-Hamas war, largely via social media. During the first week of the war, Sarraj's home was damaged by an airstrike and so he moved with his wife and daughter to live with his parents in Tal al-Hawa.[3] The family home was hit by an air strike on the 22nd of October. Sarraj was moved to hospital after being hit by shrapnel and died there. The rest of the family survived.[5]
Sarraj's death was met with "a stream of grieving tributes on social media", many of which linked his death to the killing of journalists during the war generally. Statements were released by Ain Media, Radio France Internationale, and colleagues in Gaza and abroad, including Amnesty International’s Secretary General Agnes Callamard.[5][4][1]
