Roseburg is an American alternative rock band[1][2] based in Provo, Utah. The four-member band consists of Zach Knell (guitar and lead vocals), Soren Buchert (bass), Keith Lambson (drums), and Samuel Sheppard (guitar and keyboards).
The band formed in 2016 and has released two EPs and one full-length studio album.
History
2016–2018: Formation and Heaven vs. Hollywood
Roseburg formed in Roseburg, Oregon while Knell and Sheppard were stationed there as volunteer missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The night they met, they wrote what would later become the band's second single "Identity Prices." The two stayed in contact for the remainder of their service, forming plans to start a band when they returned home. Knell later met Lambson, another missionary, and they began writing "Stay Golden," the band's debut single. Upon the completion of their missionary service in 2018, the three moved to Provo, Utah and formed Roseburg, named after the city where they all met.[3]
Their first EP, Heaven vs. Hollywood, was heavily influenced by their experience as teenage Latter-day Saint missionaries and was made up of songs they wrote during that time. The 5 songs were recorded at June Audio in Provo with engineer and producer Scott Wiley (The Killers, Neon Trees, The National Parks, Michael Barrow & The Tourists). "Stay Golden" went viral due to appearances from influencers Dylan Jordan and Summer McKeen in the song's music video. Knell went on to star alongside Jordan and McKeen in Snapchat's first original TV series Endless Summer.[4][5]
2019–2020: Righteous Punk and Hiatus
In January 2019, while the band was touring the west coast, they added bass player Soren Buchert, Sheppard's cousin. The band released the single “Wave” – Roseburg’s biggest hit to date. It received extensive radio play, Spotify editorial playlist rotation, and press coverage.[6]
The success of the band attracted Sleeping With Sirens singer Kellin Quinn, who grew up in Medford, Oregon and wanted to support a band that formed in and near his hometown. He became a mentor and friend to the band[7] and even featured on the Roseburg single “RIP”, which landed them a spot on the cover of Alternative Press magazine.[8]
Roseburg’s debut album Righteous Punk was released on February 18, 2020, the band’s 2-year-anniversary, alongside dates for a crowdfunded national tour. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tour was cancelled and the band went on an extended hiatus.[9]
2023-Present: 2 in a Million and Comeback
Between 2020-2022 members of the band released solo projects. Knell released the EP The Boy In White, Lambson released his debut album Roadtrip and his sophomore album Deconstruction under the name Dryggs[10], and Sheppard released his album Endangered Species, a record he co-wrote with his father under the name YesterKid[11]. Endangered Species was the first time the members of Roseburg had collaborated since their hiatus, and the experience inspired a reunion.
In August of 2022 the band announced their return via social media. Soon after, they released the single “Alice”.[12] Since that time, they've been steadily releasing songs from their sophomore LP 2 in a Million.[13]
