Rose Collins (27 June 1977 – 3 May 2023) was a New Zealand human rights lawyer, short story writer and poet. Collins was of Irish descent and lived in Lyttelton Harbour.[1]

Awards

Rose Collins won the 2021/2022 John O'Connor First Book Award.[2][3][4][5], judged by Elizabeth Smither. She was shortlisted for the UK Bare Fiction Prize (2016), the Bridport Prize (2020) and the takahē magazine Monica Taylor Poetry Prize (2020)[1]. Collins was award second place in the 2019 National Flash Fiction Day Competition[6] and commended in the 2012 New Zealand Poetry Society competition[7].

Career

Rose Collins graduated with a Master in Creative Writing from the International Institute of Modern Letters in 2010. Her work is published in various literary journals, including Pieces in Sport (Issue 39, 2011), Positano in Turbine | Kapohau (2010), The Assumption in Sweet Mammalian (Issue 3), Poetry New Zealand Yearbook 2019.

Her debut poetry collection, My thoughts are all of swimming, was published in August 2022 by Sudden Valley Press.[8] It was launched by Sudden Valley Press and the Canterbury Poets Collective during National Poetry Day celebrations at Tūranga.[9]
