Ronald Barnett (born 1947) is Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Education, University of London.[1] His primary interests are that of philosopher, theorist and analyst of higher education.[2] His first publication, The Idea of Higher Education (1990), is recognized as being having introduced and developed the philosophy of higher education as a field in its own right.[3] [4]His Realizing the University in an Age of Supercomplexity (1999) extended key themes of the former. Both works are now regarded as being classic texts in the field of higher educational research.[5][6][7]

Barnett has written over 35 books and authored over 150 peer reviewed papers. His work has been translated into many languages.[8] [9]

Some of Barnett’s most recent books include The Ecological University: A Feasible Utopia (2018), The Philosophy of Higher Education: A Critical Introduction (2022) and Thinking and Revisiting the University: the selected works of Ronald Barnett (2015). The latter two have been regarded by reviewers, and Barnett himself, as an extensive reflection and prognosis on the burgeoning research into the philosophy of higher education, which in no small way was inaugurated by his pioneering earlier work, especially the Idea of an Education (1990).[10]

Barnett is the inaugural president of the Philosophy and Theory in Higher Education Society. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Eastern Europe, the higher doctorate of the University of London, is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, a visiting professor of numerous UK, Chinese and Australian Universities and a Special Advisor to the UK Parliamentary Select Committee on Higher Education. He now works as a consultant and in advisory roles, and has worked and chaired numerous international councils and committees for Higher Education, including UNESCO.[11][12]
